Our Mission

“Extending our hands to the community”

Our Vision

To support and provide ministries that enable those facing challenges to strengthen and improve their quality of life.

Our History

On May 1, 2020 First United Methodist Church merged with Cedarville United Methodist Church of Pottstown, PA. On that day Mission First was born, a community outreach in the heart of Pottstown and a ministry of Cedarville UMC. However, Mission First has its actual beginnings rooted deeply in First UMC.

In 1838 the very first building was erected at 414 East High Street in Pottstown and was then known as First Methodist Episcopal Church. Over many years the church grew greatly in its membership and the name was changed to First United Methodist Church. It became more commonly known as First Church of Pottstown. It also grew in size with multiple expansions of  its physical presence. Unfortunately, as times changed, so did the needs of the congregation and a decision was made to consider a merger with Cedarville UMC. After months of meetings, with God’s Spirit and direction, the decision was made to merge the churches by overwhelmingly positive votes from both congregations. Going forward, First United Methodist would close following 182 years of ministry in the heart of Pottstown. But new life was coming!

Through all of the changes one thing remained a priority – the needs of the community First UMC had served, and the ministries already in place there. These were considered too important to let end. The dedication to continue serving in existing and new ways led to Mission First becoming a reality. From Clare’s Clothing Closet to providing water and a phone charging station for those in need, Mission First continues to seek and implement ways to serve the hearts of the community and fulfill our mission of extending our hands to the community
